This is a story that begins in the dark—real, thick, unwelcome darkness. In the rural corners of the Philippines, especially in the rainy months when the power lines hum and flicker out, the night becomes an ocean without shore. As a child, I was taught not to fear the dark, but to listen closely, for it is there that the small and determined make their presence known. In those blackest hours, when candles burned to nubs and even the moon shied behind clouds, I would press my forehead to the window and watch, waiting for the first sign of light.

That’s when the “simot simot” appears. Known by different names across villages, this tiny bug—the firefly, the lamp-bearing wanderer—draws its path through the night as if it carries a story in each shimmering pulse. In Filipino folklore, the simot simot is more than an insect; it is a bearer of hope, a promise that even the deepest shadows can be pierced by something beautiful and alive. Elders whisper that simot simot brings luck, guiding lost souls and weary travelers home, and reminding wandering hearts that the world is never truly empty of light.

This piece, simply titled “Simot,” was born from that memory and myth, fusing the lessons of my ancestors with the journeys of my own heart. The art speaks of a traveler—part human, part dream—walking bravely across an uncertain landscape, led by a single, unwavering lantern. Base lines are sharp and uneasy, yet within them is a defiant elegance, the same beauty in the awkward flutter of a firefly’s wing.

And how often does this become our story? So many of us have known dark chapters—days colored by uncertainty, weeks where the search for meaning or progress felt endless. Yet inside us, somewhere quiet and often overlooked, a tiny spark persists. The simot simot’s gift is not just light, but the reminder that darkness is fertile ground for courage, that each night survived is a small victory, and every flicker is a celebration of resilience.

In Filipino history, community gatherings in the dark would pause, all eyes turning to that solitary glow flickering near the ceiling. Stories would unravel around the light, binding generations together with laughter, warnings, and whispered dreams. The simot simot witnessed secrets, carried love notes, and outlasted storms. For children, that blinking light in the darkened room was proof that even in solitude, there was a companion. For elders, it was a messenger, a symbol of continuity when all else seemed to change.

When you see this piece, may you remember that you too are a simot in your way—a spark against the odds, a wandering spirit drawn by the lure of a better tomorrow. May your journey be illuminated by hope, however small, and may you honor the lights that led you through your hardest nights. The story of “Simot” is our shared adventure: born out of obscurity, shaped by adversity, forever seeking—and sometimes, becoming—the light we need most.
